Absinthe is an acient drink that can not be bought in the United States. It is a bitter green anise flavoured drink that was made popular by early 19th century artists like Piccasso, Toluse Letrec and Edgar Allen Poe. Absinthe has many myths associated with it and most of them are false. Before we had the FDA purity laws, unscrupulous or just dumb distillers would make absinthe from wood alcohol or other impure forms of grain alcohol that would cause blindness or insanity or both. Absinthe is mildly psychotropic by itself, but that wasn't enough for some people. The absinthe drinking ritual (more on that later) involves pouring the drink over a sugar cube and adding water to dilute it and offset the bitterness. It became popular to treat the sugarcube with morphine or opium to enhance the absinthe experiance. This practice led to the total ban of absinthe around the world. Science and common sense have prevailed in some countries and it has become legal to make and sell absinthe again. We offer you a chance to make your own athentic recipe with a hearty amount of "Sparkle".

This recipe is not distilled (which reduces the thujone content) but rather steeped to extract thujone (the fun stuff). It can be made with our $15.00 refill kit or with the "Delux Absinthe Making Kit" that includes cool bottles, absinthe sugar cubes, absinthe spoon, absinthe flavor extract and wormwood extract, and an ounce of real wormwood. All for the low, low price of $35.00.

Just follow these directions:

1) Mix 1 0z wormwood with at least 1 cup of cold tap water and soak for 2 to 4 hours, mixing often.

2) Strain wormwood through a coffee filter and squeeze gently, to remove excess water.

3) Put the wormwood in a pint glass and cover with 195 proof alcohol (everclear) and soak for 2 -3 days, stirring 2 times a day. Keep it covered with plastic wrap to prevent evaporation. (vodka does not work as well, if at all)

4) Using a funnel and a coffee filter, filter your wormwood infused alcohol into a 750 ml bottle.

5) Rinse the wormwood in the filter with ½ cup of vodka. (you may want to change filters once or twice during these steps) then gently squeeze and discard the wormwood. Repeat this step if nessasary

6) Add 1 bottle of wormwood extract and 1 bottle of absinth extract.

7) Filter your mixture again through another clean filter into 2 separate 375ml bottles.

Options:

A) Traditional: If you are going to drink your absinth in the traditional method, by pouring it over sugar cubes with an absinth spoon, simply top off a 750ml bottle with vodka. Adding ½ very cold water will louche (make cloudy) and mellow the drinking experience.

B) Ready to drink: For sweetened ready to drink liquor, add 2 or 3 tablespoons of honey and shake till dissolved. Top off 750 ml bottle with vodka.

Caution: This will make a 120 proof beverage with a hallucinogenic kick. IT’S FLAMEABLE as well! If you are going to burn your sugar cube, please have a fire extinguisher nearby. Alcohol and fire can be harmful to your health.
